Volunteer FAqs

Find out all you need to know about volunteering at Maggie's Monster.

  • Maggie’s Monster Bike and Hike is a 24-hour fundraising team challenge. The event goes from Fort William through to Inverness covering 71 miles along the Great Glen Way. 2014 is the eleventh year of the event.

  • For this role you will ideally have:

    • lots of enthusiasm
    • a sense of humour
    • ability to work as part of a team
    • great interpersonal & communication skills
  • We need volunteers all along the route:

Fort William – Friday evening & Saturday early morning (sunrise)
Fort Augustus – Saturday morning & afternoon
Invermoriston – Saturday morning till evening
Drumnadrochit – Saturday afternoon till late night
Inverness – Saturday evening going into Sunday morning (night shift)

  • Once we have received your Volunteer registration form we will confirm your duties and timings and keep in touch on a regular basis with any event updates. You will be contacted before the event to discuss any queries and receive a full briefing about the role on arrival. A team leader will brief, guide, support and work closely with you.

  • Monster participants need as much support as possible and we need volunteers to help from Fort William through to Inverness at various points along the Great Glen Way. Duties may include registration, giving directions, cleaning, handing out medals and goody bags, car park management and cheering Monster teams along the route.

  • Volunteers will be paid out-of-pocket expenses for costs such as travel or any other legitimate expenses; these should be agreed in advance. Hours of volunteering work where possible will be flexible and encourage off peak travel.
    • The satisfaction of knowing that you are making a valuable contribution to Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres across the UK.
    • The experience of working with Maggie’s.
    • The enjoyment of meeting new people.

Maggie’s volunteers do not receive any payment for their work but are able to claim out-of-pocket expenses for costs such as travel or any other legitimate expenses; these should be agreed in advance. Hours of volunteering work where possible will be flexible and encourage off peak travel.

  • There will be food and drink available at the checkpoints. Vegetarians will be provided for, but unfortunately we cannot provide for other dietary requirements. We recommend you bring other snacks and drinks along for your own consumption.
  • There are a variety of shifts available from the morning of Friday 2 May to Sunday 4 May. We aim to give you regular breaks during your shift, however there are busy peaks throughout the day and you may have a longer break while it is quiet before the next peak comes along.

  • Maggie’s would prefer for you to arrange your own accommodation if possible. However, if you are coming from afar and volunteering over the whole weekend or at an early/late shift then we can provide accommodation. Please note that accommodation through Maggie’s will be in a hostel or bunkhouse.
