A volunteer's view of Monster

Volunteer PicWe asked two of our brilliant volunteers to give us some feedback about their experiences with Monster.  Find out what volunteers Marianne White and Carol Morton had to say:

Volunteer - Marianne White

Q.    What made you decide to volunteer at the event?

We have used Maggie’s Centre in Dundee and I know of the good work they do. It is a great charity and when I heard that they were doing this event in Fort William I was more than happy to volunteer.

q.    Did you get your friends involved?

Yes, I contacted several of my friends and family and in the end I got my mum and another friend to join me.

q.    What kind of duties were you involved in?

On the Friday night during registration and the Pasta Party I was tasked with attaching the time check bracelets to the participants. On the second day we were at the start line at Neptune’s Staircase from 5.30am to help the competitors get to their allocated start line.

q.    What did you like about volunteering at the event?

It was amazing to see so many people taking on the challenge and the atmosphere at the event was very up beat and inspiring. It was a lovely feeling to be helping such a good cause. It was very well organised and everything had been thought of and planned which was really good.

q.    How long was your shift?

Friday night we worked from 6pm - 11pm
Saturday we worked from 5.30am - 11am

q.    Were you well looked after?

Yes, the Maggie’s staff were really lovely to us and we felt looked after and wanted.

q.    Did you feel the participants appreciated your support?

Yes, the Friday night was very busy for the participants with registration, lots of event information and the Pasta Party. On the Saturday we were there to answer their questions for the start of the challenge, which they appreciated very much.

Volunteer – Carol Morton

q.    What made you decide to volunteer at the event?

I want to do what I can to support Maggie’s and volunteering to help when I can is one way of doing that.

q.    What kind of duties were you involved in?

Checking the participants in as they arrived at Drumnadrochit which is the Silver Finish and the half way point for those heading to the Gold Finish.

q.    What did you like about volunteering at the event?

Being a part of something worthwhile, feeling useful and the camaraderie.

q.    How long was your shift?

Three hours but I decided to stay for six hours

q.    Were you well looked after?

Yes

q.    Did you feel the participants appreciated your support?

Yes, I think they appreciated the encouragement we gave them as they came in to the checkpoint.
