Bike hire or bringing your own bike
We offer a limited number of hire bikes on a first come first served basis. To book one, you must select bike hire when registering and pay the £40 reservation cost with your registration fee (refunds for reservations cannot be made after April 1 2014).
A helmet is provided with every hire bike. You must bring your own helmet if you are using your own bike to take part in the event.
The hire bikes are all good quality front suspension mountain bikes, valued at around £400 to £600. No tools or tubes are provided with the hire bikes, you must bring your own. The required spare tube size is a 26'' x 2'' mountain bike inner tube, presta (narrow) valve is the most flexible choice as it will fit onto any bike. There will be selection of tubes available for sale at the time of bike collection. The bike hire company provides bikes to suit all heights, shapes and sizes so please do not worry that a bike to suit your height will not be available – it will!
At the Registration Party on the eve of the event you will be given a wristband to identify you as having hired a bike. You then show this to the bike hire company on the Saturday morning at the Start to collect your hire bike and helmet. You will return your hire bike and helmet to the hire company at the end of the cycling section in Fort Augustus.
Bringing your own bike
We do not advise participants to use hybrid bikes at Monster – a mountain bike should always be used. If you are bringing your own bike you will need to arrange your own transportation to get your bike to the Start, and your support team will be responsible for taking your bike from you at the end of the cycling section in Fort Augustus.
We also recommend that you carry a pump, inner tubes, puncture repair kit and set of alan keys. Maggie’s bike marshals will also be equipped with these items and will be around on the cycling route to assist you at any time. Remember to practice changing your inner tube prior to the event
If you are using your own bike at Monster, please service it before the event. This will ensure you have the best possible cycling experience on the day and reduce the likelihood of any breakdown incidents.
All helmets need to be worn and remain fastened whilst riding. Failure to comply will result in disqualification from the event.
If all Maggie’s hire bikes have been taken by the time you register for Monster, you can either bring your own or hire locally to the event. Some suggested local bike supply companies:
