Why fundraise for Maggie's?
Monster is a fantastic way of supporting Maggie’s & raising much needed funds for our network of cancer caring centres across the UK. Over 5,400 people have taken part in Monster since 2004 and have raised a fantastic £4.2 million in support of our work across the UK. In 2011 Monster Bike & Hikers raised almost £500,000, an incredible amount and enough to fund two of our Maggie’s Centres for a year.
In 2012, please help us to smash that total so we can support even more people affected by cancer; people like Bruce.
Bruce was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009 while he was going through a separation. The diagnosis left him feeling suicidal and Bruce credits Maggie's with saving his life. Through attending the Men's Group at the Maggie’s Dundee, Bruce became great friends with others in the group and they all took part in the 2010 Monster Bike and Hike.
Just before Monster, Bruce was diagnosed with cancer for a second time, with a tumour in a gland in his back, and is undergoing chemo while remaining upbeat. Bruce continues to use Maggie’s on a regular basis for support and friendship. Bruce says:
"When considering your mortality, you either say 'it's all over', or 'I'm not giving up without a fight'. When you enter the spiralling cloud of despair, there's only one way it goes – down. Maggie's is pretty good at helping people avoid that. When Gordon, Alan and I get together we talk about life in general – it's cathartic to discuss our illnesses, but at the same time we talk about random rubbish"
The money you raise will help us open our doors to more people like Bruce. At present we welcome over 400 visitors per day! Find out more information about Maggie’s so you can let your friends, family and colleagues know why you are walking and fundraising for us.
What your fundraising goes towards
- £24 pays for someone's visit to Maggie's, allowing us to provide information and emotional and psychological support
- £50 provides one ‘Caring for someone with cancer’ or a ‘Living with cancer’ course.
- £250 provides healthy lunches for one month for participants for our relaxation workshops
- £300 pays to run one of our six-week courses
- £800 funds the work of a nutrition adviser for one month.
Minimum fundraising commitment
You need to raise a minimum of £525 in total - £125 for your registration fee plus a minimum of £400 in fundraising monies. Or you can pay for your registration fee yourself.
Maggie's ask that every Monster participant raises a minimum of £400. £400 has been set as a target based on what people have raised for Maggie’s before on events like this – we know they can do it and obviously we need the event to raise as much as possible for Maggie’s. This is only a guide though – in 2011, the average amount raised per person was nearer £740 – amazing!
We ask that you send in as much fundraising money as you can, as soon as you can. It helps us in planning the event and to understand how much the event is raising for Maggie’s. Providing your registration is paid, we would not exclude you from taking part if you did not reach the £400 target prior to the event – we simply ask that you commit to raising that amount by participating in the event.
